“I have not only studied systems. I have built inside them, led through them and helped change them.Julius Kirimi Sindi, Ph.D.
01

Built in the market

Entrepreneurship with skin in the game

Product development and marketing in industry, followed by years leading an agribusiness export company as CEO. Strategy was accountable to customers, cash flow, supply chains and consequences.

02

Learned in the field

Innovation tested against lived reality

Work alongside farmers, input systems, markets and nutrition made one lesson permanent: an idea is only useful when people can adopt it, afford it and make it work in context.

03

Deepened through research & teaching

Rigour shaped in a leading US university

Doctoral economics, research and teaching at Michigan State University sharpened the ability to move between evidence, policy, learning and practical decision-making.

04

Led across systems

From programmes to institutions

Leadership and advisory work across CGIAR, development finance, governments, funders and global consulting relationships connected science to investment, implementation and scale.

05

Investing in African knowledge

Building capability that endures

At APHRC since 2022, the focus is stronger research institutions, funding readiness, knowledge visibility and a shorter journey from African evidence to public value.

How I work

Rigorous enough for the evidence. Practical enough for Monday morning.

Good strategy respects both the quality of the idea and the reality of the institution expected to deliver it.

Discuss an engagement
01

Begin with context

Understand the institution, incentives, history and people before prescribing a solution.

02

Protect rigour—then make it useful

Evidence matters most when decision-makers can understand it, trust it and act on it.

03

Build with the people who will carry it

Co-design creates ownership, surfaces practical constraints and strengthens execution.

04

Connect ambition to resources

Strategy, proposals, partnerships, delivery and learning should reinforce one another.

05

Leave capability behind

A strong engagement should make the team and institution more capable after it ends.

Research & public value

A practice built around one enduring question:

How can research become more rigorous, more useful—and more capable of changing what happens next?

My work spans research quality, capacity strengthening, evidence-to-policy, proposal development and institutional learning. This platform brings together papers, projects, tools and lessons from more than three decades of practice.
